When you look at synthetic oil vs regular oil the first thing to consider is the advantages, one blend consisting of chemical compounds which are artificially synthesized or a regular mineral blend derived from crude. The artificial term meaning synthetic oil is produced in the lab compared to mineral coming from the ground. We all know that internal combustion engines need oil to function, but it does much more than just lubricate. It serves as a cleaner & sealant, it also cools the engine and acts as a corrosion inhibitor.

Synthetic oil was first produced to use in jet engines starting in 1972. The anti-friction properties reduces wear and tear on engine parts and it performs well in high heat & cold weather conditions without viscosity breakdown. Viscosity is the thickness or the resistance of oil to pour. A zero weight lubricant will flow much easier that a 30 weight lubricant.

Since the price of synthetic oil is more than double that of regular oil it has only captured 10 percent of the market. While regular oil is cheaper it has some drawbacks. The resistance to flow during cold temperatures is much greater compared to synthetic oil which has the additives to reduce friction and increase flow. Cold starting will not show obvious signs of engine breakdown at the time but will cause reduced engine life. Lack of lubrication or oil breakdown is the most common cause of engine failure.

1. At -40 temperatures regular oil turns into a heavy syrup-like substance and will resist flow. It takes approximately 5 minutes for regular crude to circulate freely through the engine which has to rely on the film left on engine parts from the last time it was operated.

2. Fuel economy increases when the resistance to flow and friction is reduced. It takes less energy to rotate the engine so in turn less fuel is required. Artificial lubricants provides these characteristics and statistics show improved vehicle mileage up to 5 percent depending on driving habits and engine condition.

3. The cost of a synthetic oil change is 2 to 3 times more than regular oil but can be left in the engine for an extended period of time. Conventional oil changes are usually every 5,000 km while synthesized lubricant changes can go as high as 10,000 km. So almost half the oil change frequency will balance out the difference in cost.

4. Driving every day and commuting with stop and go traffic in hot and cold climates can be classified as extreme driving conditions. Synthetic oil has the ability to resist congealing or turning into a jelly like substance in these conditions.

5. New or newer vehicles are required to use synthetic oil according to the manufacturer specs. Surveys have shown that motorists are hanging on to their vehicles much longer compared to 5 years ago so preventive maintenance is more important than ever to sustain the life of your engine.

Synthetic oil vs regular oil is similar to comparing apples and oranges. It costs more but has more positive long term effects. It is up to the consumer to decide if they want to spend more money for fewer oil changes and better engine protection or stick to mineral oil and keep the extra dollars in their pocket.
